MEET J. EVANS AND HIS ROCK BAND!The star of the show is of course the front man and band leader J. Evans himself, who provides the vocals and the compositions.A loner noted for his black, self-deprecating humour, he takes on a new persona when he's leading the band through a searing electric blues-laced piece of rock'n'roll. "It's the most exciting thing I know," he confided. "It's always been the only thing I've really wanted to do." Born in Dartford, southeast of London, John Evans has been playing guitar and singing since his early teens. By 16 he was in his first band, playing Rolling Stones and Chuck Berry covers, and has been in many others since. In the 1990s, he fronted a three-piece band called The Business, later renamed Fat City, which successfully entertained rough, tough'n'boozy audiences with full-on blues-rock on two German tours. As a one-man-show singer-songwriter he even opened for Nina Simone at the Albert Hall in 1998. But by 2003, after a stay in the United States, John wanted back in the mainstream with a full and varied rock'n'roll band sound. "In the Wild Years" was the first album to assert this direction. The upcoming new album will confirm it, largely thanks to John's friend and musical mentor Mick Doherty, who did much to ensure "In the Wild Years" came out alright in the end. Mick is producing and arranging the new album, and plays guitar on it too. This seems the right place to say a big "thank you" to John's German touring band, great players who made a difficult task possible. Thanks again lads, to Vince Martel (drums, strange faces), Christian "Jockel" Jakob (piano, organ, backing vocals and driving duties), Karl "Kalle" Mittenzwei (bass guitar, general clowning and driving duties) and Kiryk Drewinski (lead guitar and graphic design). We really rocked -- sometimes! (Notes by Michael Anders, J Evans manager) Go to the 'PICTURES' page to see photos of John Evans and the touring band. |
